I Just Got Published in Business Insider
Marking one year of self-publishing with my first national byline—just the beginning.
Hey friends! I’m thrilled to share that my first-ever national byline just dropped in the Business Insider. My latest piece, “I moved with my fiancé from D.C. to Arkansas to save money. It was actually more expensive — and 5 months later, I left,” recounts the wild, expensive ride from Bentonville’s boutique bubble to the freedom of solo travel—and leaving a relationship behind.
In 2024, I started Girl Resting as a way to share myself and my stories with the world. The truth is, I would write if no one ever read a word of it. The fact that the stories I’ve shared on here have had an impact is beyond my wildest dreams. There is nothing that makes me feel more alive than hearing from other women that my words make them feel seen. I write as a way to know myself better—I believe that in self-exposing the most complicated, confusing parts of myself, I might rid myself (and potentially other women) of the shame associated with those parts.
At the beginning of 2025, I decided to take a leap. While I love self-publishing my words, and will always continue to do so, I yearned for something bigger. At the end of December, I set my sights on getting published in a national publication. I made a dream list—The Cut, Vogue, Conde Nast Traveler, GQ.
Truth be told, Business Insider was never in my line of sight. But when I saw that they were looking for stories about moving regrets, I knew I had a story for them.
I was given 700 words to tell a story that really required 10,000 words, but I made it work. I learned how to work with an editor, I signed a contributors contract, and I saw my story shaped for a specific audience.
This piece is really an amuse-bouche for what is to come. And friends, there is so much to come.
One last thing—if you are a woman who dares to share her thoughts or opinions on the internet, men are going to have something to say to you. Men have gone out of their way to find me on Instagram and Facebook to leave me messages telling me their embarrassed for me, that my ex dodged a bullet, and that I sound like a “high maintenance, complaining little bitch.”
And you know, if this is the rite of passage for a woman sharing her story, than its a price I’m willing to pay. In fact, it makes me laugh to think about all the better things these men could be doing with their time. But I digress.
Huge thank-you to all of you who've read, subscribed, shared, and cheered me on. I wouldn’t be here without your support. I’m just getting started.
Read it now, and let me know what resonated most!
There should be a mandatory course for people who join any section of the internet - “what to do when you feel triggered” 😅 spoiler alert it does not involve giving unsolicited opinions!
Tyler – I stumbled across your Business Insider article and thought, “Okay, who is this badass?” So naturally, I internet-stalked you (in the friendliest way possible) and found your Substack. I’d been hearing whispers about Substack like it was some secret society, so I downloaded the app and binged all your posts like a Netflix series. You've got a bold, grab-life-by-the-lapels energy that’s hard to ignore. I’m hooked. Keep 'em coming—and thanks for dragging me into the Substack rabbit hole!
